A Robert Wood Johnson Foundation survey of 100 members of the online physician-only community, Sermo.com found that over 50% of physicians surveyed either somewhat or strongly agreed that “allowing Nurse Practitioners to practice independently would increase access to primary care in the US.”  Nevertheless, most physicians were skeptical that NP independence would decrease costs and almost 80% believed it would result in a decrease in average quality of care provided to patients.
